Pretty birds in Fantasy’s presentation display their plummage.

It is exactly 38 days since Carnival Tuesday 2012 and bandleaders and designers are already planning their presentations for Carnival 2013. In fact, having just celebrated a Thanksgiving Mass in St Mary’s College Chapel, Trini Revellers has now officially launched its 2013 presentation—Brazil, Brazil. Not to be left out, next month Islandpeople Mas is releasing the theme of its C2K13 presentation, with a launch planned for the second week in August. Newcomer to the mas realm, Fantasy Carnival will hit the streets next year with a presentation titled Savage, while Tribe, The Ultimate Carnival Experience, has pencilled a date in July for its 2013 mas band launch. For Carnival 2012, Trini Revellers performed admirably, placing second in the Queen’s Park Savannah Band of the Year Competition, in the Large Band Category, behind Brian Mac Farlane’s Sanctification. The positions were reversed though in the Downtown competition.

Revellers’ king, Brian Chin, placed sixth in the King of Carnival final, and its queen, Avernell Johnson, tenth in the Queen of Carnival Competition, on Dimanche Gras night. In addition, JMC 3Veni, which has been playing on the road with Trini Revellers for ten consecutive years, had its lead vocalist, KI, crowned as 2012 Chutney Soca Monarch. And so, looking ahead, come 2013, Trini Revellers is presenting Brasilia, and some of the beautiful, exotic sections are attractively titled, The Yanomani & Macuxi Indians of Roraima, The Lost Tribes of the Rain Forest, The gauchos of Rio Grande do Sul, The Babacu Palm Trees of Maranhao, and of course, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Also expected to be launching their C2K13 presentations around mid-year are Harts Int, Spice and Showtime.

It is the second holiday weekend of 2012 and it is filled with an assortment of fun things to do. Tomorrow evening, Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (Tuco) will hold the eagerly awaited final of its inaugural National Humour Calypso Monarch Competition, at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, at 8 pm. The semifinal was held earlier this month at SWWTU Hall with a sold-out audience in attendance and its was a rib-tickling affair. That round of competition was won by Myron Bruce (The Incredible Myron B), representing South’s Kaiso Karavan, followed by veteran Fred Mitchel (Mighty Composer) of the Traditional Calypso on the Move Tent. Tomorrow is expected to be an even more hilarious affair, with guest artistes including junior bards Nicola Francis, Jelani Wells and Tanisha Weekes; Tobago’s Henson Wright; and, semi-final crowd-pleaser Lil Jean. Musical accompaniment is by Kelly Green & Harmony. Required to perform one selection at the semi-final, tomorrow’s eight finalists are mandated to render two songs.

Pan is also in the mix this weekend, beginning tonight when the ComPANions 2012 Family Day eliminations continue at Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars pan complex, Duke Street, Port-of-Spain, at 8 pm. Pannists will tonight compete in All Fours, football and the new and innovative Pan Feud Quiz. Tomorrow evening, from 5 pm, Pan Trinbago premieres its 2012 Pan in D Countryside series, at Brighton Recreation Ground, Pt D’or, La Brea. This exciting family event will feature 2012 National Panorama runner-up Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove, La Brea Nightingales, Panosonic Connections, Birdsong, Trinidad East Side Symphony and Jah Roots. Last year, Pan in D Countryside was arguably the best organised and staged event by Pan Trinbago. Tomorrow night, Smokey & Bunty celebrates its 23rd anniversary at its Western Main Road location in St James. Aside from some of the artistes that have frequented this internationally famous watering hole, the Carib Girls will be there with giveaways. Proprietress Lisa Ann Mc Kenzie said yesterday, patrons can also expect specials on drinks.
