Hikers gather at a site in Oropouche.

The sleepy village of Matelot will be the starting point of Island Hikers and Fitness Walkers’ annual hike-a-thon on Saturday at 6.30 am. The hike ends at the Spring Bridge in Blanchisseuse. Participants will get the opportunity to see the remote north coast beaches of Cachipa, Madamas, Grand and Petit Tacarib, Murphy Bay and Paria which are only accessible by hiking. Except for the nesting of the leatherback turtles, these beaches are mostly uninhabited and their natural beauty remains preserved.

The trek is divided into three groups of fast-, medium- and slow-pace walkers and will take the average fit person between six and ten hours to complete the 19.7-mile coastal journey. Upon completion each participant  will receive a commemorative T-shirt, a medal and refreshments. The hike is rated eight and is not recommended for first-time or inexperienced hikers. Pre-registration is required to participate in the hike-a-thon and transportation to Matelot and the return from Blanchisseuse will be provided. A St John’s ambulance team will be on standby to assist hikers at the finish line.
