Olympic athletes get support through music

Kees Dieffenthaller’s We Are Conquerors was the send-off song for T&T Olympic representatives.

As the athletes representing T&T prepare for the 2012 Olympics in London, some artistes here at home are lending their support in the way they know best—through music. Kees Dieffenthaller’s We Are Conquerors has picked up Olympic momentum and was performed during a send off ceremony for the T&T representatives on June 25. In March Machel Montano revealed that he had plans to record an album for Caribbean athletes who will be representing the region at the games. At that time the Pump Yuh Flag singer said he had three tracks written for the compilation.

However, when contacted by the T&T Guardian, his mother Elizabeth Montano said he was out of the country and could not give the status of the album. Soca artiste Shurwayne Winchester says he too was giving some thought to an idea he has for a song to mark the occasion. Meanwhile, MX Prime, who recorded the single Soca Warriors in 2006 for the T&T senior football team’s journey to Germany, says, while he doesn’t have anything in mind just yet, he will be looking on and paying attention to things as they progress. Wishing the T&T representatives the best of luck, soca sensation Rodney “Benjai” Le Blanc says his focus hasn’t been on preparing a recording for the occasion. “I believe all my music is for the representatives and patriotic people in general. I give all of them all my support spiritually and I wish them good luck, but right now, studio wise, I’m preparing for 2013.” The games will commence on July 27.
