Everybody Tweets was the theme for up and coming artist Tavernelle Wells, who displayed her latest body of work at her highly anticipated solo exhibition between July 3 to 8 at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts at UWI, St Augustine. The human resource officer cum full-time artist showcased 21 acrylic pieces (painted on large gallery-wrapped canvas) at her exhibition.“This series is my reflection of my transition from the corporate world to art in a natural setting, and my discovery of familiar faces in the local birds around my studio. They (the birds) remind me of the people I left behind in the office. They have personality, character and quirks,” she said. Interestingly, after her corporate days became a distant memory, Wells was faced with the reality that she would not be interfacing with her coworkers or the general public in the same manner that she once did. Painting in the natural setting of her home studio in Santa Cruz, Wells realised that indeed she was not alone.

Besides the natural foliage that surrounded her, the artist quickly became aware of its natural inhabitants—birds. “I was inspired to say Everybody Tweets—as I explore the similarities between the human interaction and avian interaction. Tweet refers to old fashion chatter and modern day texting in human interaction as well as the tweeting, chirping, singing of the birds as they communicate with each other.” Inspired by the classics Rembrandt and Van Gogh, Wells stays true to her signature technique—criss crossed technique of painting whereby she interweaves colour, texture and perspective.
