Does the name Jesse Williams ring a bell? If you’re an avid reader of gieMAGAZINE, it should. Jesse, a Senior Press Pass Correspondent was one of the 10 aspiring journalists participating in the inaugural three-week internship at the Trinidad Publishing Company in August 2009. He has recently been elected as the new president of the Trinidad and Tobago Students Association (TTSA) at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. The Trinidad and Tobago Students Association is dedicated entirely to Trinidad and Tobago students living abroad. The association is based at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in Cave Hill, Barbados. The purpose of this association is simple - to encourage and foster relationships between (and among) the Trinidad and Tobago students, as well as between those students and others from around the world. With events like the various ‘expos’ which the TTSA holds at various times during the year, the TTSA has proven itself to be quite adept at sharing information about Trinidad and Tobago’s culture and heritage to the world. It strives to improve the image of Trinidad and Tobago while enlightening those not fortunate to know of our beautiful island.

Currently in his second year pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Management Studies (Special), the president of the TTSA stated how elated he was to be elected after weeks of arduous campaigning. When asked why he chose to run for President this time around (Jesse served as Treasurer of the TTSA for the academic year 2011/2012), the 21-year old stated, “I have an unconditional love for this association and cannot let it stand to wither on the vine. This and the fact I believe it is my time to have a go at the position.”Jesse, whom is open to constructive criticism, believes that he is a very approachable person, a trait required for his recent position. Besides being approachable, he describes himself as a calm and collected young man still developing into the person he wants to be. His ability to connect with people from various backgrounds proves to be an asset when dealing with students belonging to different parts of Trinidad and Tobago. In his term in office, Jesse aims to promote the TTSA more in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago as well, to foster integration amongst everyone in terms of bridging the Trinidad and Tobago divide, and to create more harmonious relationships with other island associations. He intends to ensure the student membership is increased via his Welfare Action Programme. Jesse also believes that the TTSA needs to shift its focus from being a law-oriented association and have much more participation from other faculties. In giving his best attempt, Jesse cited that hard work will always be rewarded, and that is what keeps him going when the load seems heavy. Congratulations to Jesse!
