More than 100 alumni of St James Government Secondary School (SJS) attended their 50th anniversary reunion on May 12, at Lions Civic Centre, Port-of-Spain. The nostalgic evening was hosted by Errol Fabien doing a “Remember When” segment which was very entertaining as it engaged all the alumni to remember some very unusual things that happened way back when. It went down well with the gathering. Fabien was also engaged in a Q&A segment for donated gift items, where three questions were asked and the person with the correct answer was given a gift. This section was well received too.

Before the merrymaking began, two powerpoint presentations were done by Ronald Huggins, Bari Barnes and Candi Berment. They were on the launch of the SJS Co-operative and the flood destruction of the school’s compound, and in particular the destruction of the library and the computer lab. The alumni are being urged to assist in the urgent refurbishment of these facilities. Memorabilia, including SJS alumni polos, priced at $75, as well as a musical DVD of last year’s Reunion, were on sale at the event. Three hampers were presented to past principal Van Stewart, and former teachers Joan Richardson and Hazel Colthrust.

Feedback so far is that the change in venue was good, the food was good, the music and drink was good. The planners of the reunion intend, next year, reverting to the original date of the Saturday after Mother’s Day for the annual affair. Among the corporate people supporting the venture were Agostini Ltd; Angostura Ltd, Blink Broadband; Chere Mere; Lewis Appliances; Police Credit Union; and, Crosby’s Music World. (PRB)
