Chairman Sammy one of East Zone’s top cricketers

Chairman of the East Zone Cricket Council, Tarandath Sammy is showing how the game should be played, as he was voted one of the five cricketers of the year at the Zone’s prize giving recently. Sammy was however beaten to the top award by Stephen Wharwood, who was named Cricketer of the Year. The function took place at the El Dorado West Secondary School and was a gala affair. Among the highlights of the evening’s proceedings was the feature address delivered by president of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), Azim Bassarath. He focussed on teamwork and complimented the Zone on a very successful 2010 season, saying that it was obvious that they were a united Zone. “In our preferred sport of cricket, the concept of We before I is clearly demonstrated. In the modern game, the team is no longer eleven or even twelve or thirteen.

“The team extends to those playing, the emergency fieldsmen, the coaching staff, the management staff, the nutritionist, the analyst and could we now include the player’s agent or agents. If you are beginning to think that this is a large group, I want you to think again. “Ladies and Gentlemen, it takes much more than this to make a successful team. Let us use this very East Zone as an example. Last year you won all four inter zone titles. How did you do this? It took immense effort and teamwork, to make this happen. “Even before a child is selected for a Zonal Team, far more for a National Team, there is a cadre of good people, who go largely unrecognized, working diligently for Team East Zone. That my friends, is true Team Work.

“Working not for the glory, but out of the goodness of one’s heart, for the benefit of the Team, the Zone and the country. To all those coaches, administrators, parents, Teachers, umpires, selectors and more, let me this evening recognize your role in the development of T&T’s Cricket. “Let me congratulate you on the work that you have done and continue to do, and let me thank you on the behalf of Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and the entire fraternity.”
