Three ‘leaplings’ born in San Fernando

Three babies were born yesterday at the San Fernando General Hospital—February 29—a date which only comes once every four years. Ashley Ganga, of Scotts Road, Penal, became a proud mother of a healthy baby girl which she said was her family’s millionaire baby. Smiling as she sat on a bed at the maternity ward of the hospital, Ganga said she and her husband, Sharif Subhanie, were yet to come up with a name for this special child.
Ganga delivered the baby at 2.52 am yesterday. It was her second child. Asked how she felt that her child was born on this special day, Ganga said it was out of her hands and this day was given to her. She admitted that birthday celebration might be a bit tricky since her actual birthday will only come around every fours years.
Ganga said she had an easy delivery and that she could not complain about anything. Now she is just waiting to take her baby to their Scotts Road Penal home to meet her sister, three-year-old Shahnaz Aliyah Subhanie. A person who is born on February 29 may be called a “leapling” or a “leap year baby.”
In non leap years, their birthdays may be celebrated on either February 28 or March 1. Among some of the famous persons to share this same birthday was Pope John Paul III, Mark Foster of the pop band Foster the People and American rap artist and actor Ja Rule.
