Seven soldiers are facing a court martial after investigations allege they may have been involved in robberies in Tobago.  Public relations officer of the T&T Regiment Warrant Officer Class 1, Joachim Hernandez, said yesterday the incidents occurred on February 11 at Old Grange and Scarb0orough. “We conducted an investigation and out of several people who were investigated, seven soldiers were sent from Tobago to Trinidad, where they will face the military-justice system of the army,” Hernandez said.

On the date of the reported incidents, Hernandez said, several people went to the Old Grange and Scarborough Police Stations claiming to have been robbed earlier that day by people dressed in camouflage uniforms.  "The army is prepared to proceed on this matter under Service Law provided for by the Defence Force Act chapter 14:01. Under this system, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” Hernandez explained.

He added that under the system a person could stand trial by court martial, which is equivalent to the High Court. Describing the incident as “very sad,” Hernandez said it sent a negative image to the public.
Appealing to soldiers to serve citizens, he added, “We are here to protect. We are here to defend and it is always very disturbing when reports such as these arise.”
