An army sergeant was killed in an early-morning road accident in Santa Cruz yesterday. Investigators said at 12.20 am, Sgt Winston Charles, of Union Road, Diego Martin, was riding his motorcycle south along the Santa Cruz Old Road, when he was involved in a collision with a car travelling in the opposite direction. Charles, who was off-duty at the time, was thrown off the motorcycle and LANDED short distance away reports say.

He was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver and passengers of the car escaped with minor injuries. In a statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment yesterday, Commanding Officer Col Anthony Phillip-Spencer said: “I would like to send condolences to Charles’ family during their time of grief.” Phillip-Spencer said funeral arrangements were still being finalised by the Charles family. Assistant Commissioner of Police Terry Young visited the scene and is heading the investigation.
