A doctor at the Sangre Grande District Hospital is expected to appear in court today charged with stealing more than $200,000 in prescription drugs from the hospital’s dispensary. Around 2.30 am yesterday police received a report from hospital staff that the dispensary at Ojoe Road had been broken into by a staff member. Police officers from the Sangre Grande CID, led by Cpl Junior Bernard, visited the scene and viewed CCTV footage at the hospital.

After interviewing staff members and security, the officers searched the doctor’s home. They reportedly found the missing drugs hidden in a duffel bag in the trunk of a vehicle parked on the property. After being detained, the doctor later was charged with larceny offences at the Valencia Police Post.  Police claimed he stole the drugs for sale to prescription drug abusers and pharmacies. Constables Neil Narine, Joel Boodoosingh and WPC Camille Francis also were involved in the exercise.
