Feasibility study to be done says Devant

Plans to extend the water taxi service from Port-of-Spain to Point Fortin have been shelved pending a feasibility study, Transport Minister Devant Maharaj said on Wednesday. He made the disclosure in the House of Representatives, in replying to an Opposition query. Maharaj said no start-up date for the Point Fortin leg of the service had been scheduled. He said implementation of that segment would be based on the study, since capital expenditure involved $53.4 million and potential revenue was only $3 million.

He said $7.4 million was initially projected for fiscal expenditure in 2011 for the Port-of-Spain to Point Fortin leg of the service. But since that part of the proposed service was not ready to be introduced, the funds were transferred to the establishment of the Drivers’ Licensing Authority. Maharaj also said the Government was not considering removing the subsidy from the water taxi service, which is around $90 one-way. He said if it was removed, passengers would end up having to pay $210 return for the Port-of-Spain to San Fernando trip. Maharaj said the Government was exploring ways of bridging the gap between expenditure and revenue generated.
