Primary schools in Point Fortin dominated the Pan-For-Blue Competition in the borough, yesterday. Point Fortin RC dethroned four-time winner and defending champion, Edinburgh Government Primary, which had to settle for second place. The school walked away with the first prize of $6,000 and a trophy. Edinburgh Government received a cash prize of $4,000 and a trophy, while third place, Point Fortin Anglican, was awarded $3,000 and a trophy. A special award also was given to the Best Player of the Drum, which was won by Point Fortin RC’s, Terrel Moore. The other six bands each received a $600 award. The 13th annual competition, which took place at Coronation Park, Point Fortin, saw nine primary schools competing.

The Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations were initiated by former mayor Francis Bertrand. The competition was designed to promote the use of the national instrument in communities, focus on building self-esteem through music, while highlighting the work of some of Point Fortin’s notable exponents of calypso. This year, the organising committee, chaired by Rudolph Thomas, dedicated the festival to Point Fortin soca artiste. Neil “Iwer” George. The schools, which came from the South/Central Region of Pan Trinbago, had to perform a song composed and sung by George. Most popular among the selections was Na Do Dat, which was played by the two winning bands, as well as Forest Reserve AC and Grant Memorial Presbyterian.
