Driver killed on impact with LPG truck
A 43-year-old man yesterday became the latest road fatality after an early-morning accident in El Socorro. According to reports, around 5 am Edwin McBain, of El Dorado Road, Tunapuna was driving east on the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway when he lost control of his gold Nissan Almera near El Socorro.
McBain’s car reportedly slammed into a Nissan B14 before crossing the median which separates the eastbound and westbound lanes. McBain’s car slammed into a truck transporting cooking gas cylinders, which was heading west. Investigators said McBain was killed on impact with the truck, while the occupants of the B14 and truck escaped with minor injuries.
For several hours after the accident, traffic on both lanes of the highway ground to a halt, with curious commuters slowing down to catch a glimpse of the mangled wreckage of McBain’s car. With the assistance of fire officers from the Wrightson Road Fire Station, McBain’s body was removed from the wreckage and taken to the Forensic Sciences Centre in St James, where an autopsy was performed yesterday afternoon.
The wreckage of his car was towed and impounded at the Barataria Police Station, until an investigation into the incident is completed. Sgt Hyote and officers of the Highway Patrol and Traffic Branch visited the scene.
