Port-of-Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing said yesterday the addition of a pitched roof to City Hall, Knox Street, Port-of-Spain, is a measure to prevent a serious leak problem.  Lee Sing, speaking in a telephone interview with the T&T Guardian, said the Port-of-Spain City Corporation was in charge of the project and would be able to provide the cost and time analysis. An e-mail sent to corporation CEO Winifred David has not yet been answered. The T&T Guardian reported earlier this week that architect and conservationist Geoffrey MacLean felt the addition was “unfortunate” and not in line with the design aesthetic of the building.

However, when asked about the maintenance of the design, Lee Sing said: “I believe the corporation is making good use of the resources available to them.” He added there was no reason for concern that the Carlisle Chang mural Conquerabia on the wall facing Knox Street was in danger. The mayor said since he took office he has “done nothing but protect that mural.” Lee Sing added that the city was considering adding a skylight roof to prevent the mural being damaged by rainfall.
