Wrecking Crew on target for Kempton handicap
Suspended Neil Callan has been replaced by Jack Mitchell for the Maiden Stakes over six furlongs of Kempton polytrack tonight. I’ll bet Chris Wall’s charge retrieves recent losses against nine rivals, none of which should be capable of extending, never mind beating, this consistent, hitherto luckless Red Ransom colt, judged on two-year-old form. That recent seasonal debut was unbelievable. Midnight Rider missed the break, was rushed up and instead of getting ‘on wi’ job’ Callan tried to settle his mount. In the closing stages, the 8/13 favourite was caught on the line, and nosed. It’s good policy to make the running on fancied maidens but when plan A goes wrong, surely ‘Plan B’ is in place. It didn’t seem to be at Lingfield but Mitchell, twice second on Midnight Rider last July, should be able to ‘do the biz!’
It will be disappointing, not to mention costly, if Midnight Rider fails to convert what, realistically, is a time-handicap ‘penalty-kick! Wrecking Crew is ready to win and appears to be on a good mark for the fourteen-runner ‘aged’ handicap over twelve furlongs. West-country based, Rod Millman and son James scored when stable-companion, Irish Jugger folowed up at Southwell (Tuesday) and consistency could well gain reward for Wrecking Crew, a genuine type, which is definitely worth a sporting each-way wager. Interesting to note Riot Police is dropped in distance for the Claimng Stakes over a mile, ideal trip for this vexing, Street Cry colt which has failed in all 11 outings. For someone seeking a cheap-ish thoroughbred and a bit of fun, Riot Police would be ideal and if indeed, he gets off the mark, I’ll bet he’s claimed!
