Beacon’s Njisane Phillip became the first cyclist in history to claim four gold medals at the National Cycling Track Championships when he won the Keirin and Points Race at the Arima Velodrome yesterday. Having already taken the Flying 200m and Kilometre in record times earlier in the week, the 20-year-old surpassed Azikwe Kellar’s tally of three golds in 2007.

He will have the opportunity to add more when the championships conclude today with the Scratch Race and Team Sprint. His chances have been improved in the absence of Christopher Sellier, who has been unwell this week.

Phillip edged Southclaine’s Haseem McLean to win the Keirin while in the Points Race, he got the better of Team Trek’s Gene Samuel, who placed second. In other results, Degree Madonna’s Varun Maharaj won the Individual Pursuit, beating Ryan Sabga (Unattached) and Jovian Gomez (Madonna) respectively.
