Homeboy Dwight Hall copped first place in the fourth edition Annual Tobago Carnival Regatta which sailed off at Pigeon Point, Tobago last weekend. The event brought wind-surfing participants from all over Europe, USA, Canada and the Caribbean who competed on the North Beach circuit, taking them out around markers in the Marine Park just off the beach. Hall copped first place, beating Antiguan Skean Howie into second place while Ollie Sealey of Germany secured third place. There were also over 100 youth watersport enthusiasts and their adult counterparts, from T&T, Europe, USA, and Canada. The two-day programme featured events in Professional Sailing, Bum Boat Racing, Kite-Boarding and Wind-Surfing. The event got support from blink/bmobile which joined others, including the Tobago House of Assembly to stage the competition. Event co-owner and manager Niki Borde explained that the Regatta is deliberately scheduled ‘around Carnival time to market the sport in tandem with T&T’s national festival.’
Over 120 local young sailors (known as ‘Optimists’) including teams from the Vesigny Vikings and the Bon Accord Police Youth Club, had three days of sailing races from South Beach, Pigeon Point, to Store Bay, Tobago. In the Tobago Bum Boat races (‘Bum Boats’ are homemade sail-boats traditional in Roxborough), nine crafts, ranging in size from 15 ft to 27 ft, faced a challenging circuit that took them from the North Beach in Pigeon Point to the Marine Park, and out towards Buccoo Bay. Keith Anderson and Kevin Smart emerged winners in the A-Class and B-Class races respectively. Perhaps the most spectacular event however, was Kite-Boarding—competitors rocketing several metres in the air over waves as they took part in free-style and race events, also at the North Pigeon Point Beach. Over 35 kites from the EU, the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, T&T, Antigua and Barbados gave spectators a thrilling display of speed and skill. Jake Kellsick of Antigua and Oliver Caillet of France won the Racing and Free-Style categories respectively.
