Straker Nets, UTT cruise on opening night

Straker Nets cruised to an opening round win in the North Zone Basketball Commission First Division with a 81-73 victory over San Juan Warriors, at the Jean Pierre Complex, on Sunday. Nets, which had been out of action since lifting the Super 10 Basketball League in 2007, returned with a solid performance from point-guard Richard Guiseppi, who netted 23 points, and K Smith, who followed up with 16 points. San Juan Warriors’ Kory Leewood also had a decent outing taking 23 points, while Shorn Solomon finished on 14 points. In the second match of the opening night, UTT, which exited the recently concluded SBL in the Big-Four semifinal round defeated Police 59-50. Kern George and Kevon Noreiga took 19 and 11 points, respectively. Randy Greenidge was Police’s top scorer with 16 points.

 
 
On Tuesday, action continued in the First Division, with a keen encounter between Shak Attack and National Flour Mills, with the former team trumping the latter 96-74. Shak Attack, swelled its half time lead, which stood at 46-40, to take a comfortable victory, with a respectable performance from minute point-guard Orlando Mapp, who bagged 24 points, 18 of which were from the three-point range. Andy Best, followed close behind with 20 points. David King and Kerry Mc Millan, combined with 33 points for NFM. In the second division match on Wednesday, the University of the West Indies made light work of Raptors taking the fixture 61-48. Action will continue tonight with Straker Nets taking on Macoya forum, at 6.30 pm, before Caledonia Clippers challenge Police from 8 pm.
