Oire Trotman...registered a hat-trick for Malvern.

Oire Trotman registered a hat-trick to lead defending champion Malvern to a 3-1 whipping of Defence Force in the T&T Hockey Board Women’s Championship at the National Hockey Centre, Tacarigua, on Saturday night. With the three points, Malvern ended their seven-match first round schedule with 13 points, two adrift of leaders Paragon which has a match left to play, but certain of qualification for the “Big-Four” competition. For Defence Force which got its lone reply from Kemba Clasp, it was its sixth loss in seven matches as it remained second from bottom on the table with three points.

Over at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Training Field, Bacolet, Tobago, Gayle-Ann Nieves kept Shandy Carib Magnolias in the race for the fourth and final “Big-Four” spot with a brace in a 2-1 win over cellar-placed Paradise. Magnolias ended its first round with 11 points, and could only be surpassed by Harvard Maritime Checkers (nine points) which has two matches left to play against Paragon and third placed Notre Dame (12 points).

In the lone Men’s Championship Division match played on Saturday, Andrew Vieira scored for Corona Fatima to cancel out Jarel Thompson’s effort for Paradise in a 1-1 draw. The four qualifiers for the men’s Big-Four series have already been determined in defending league champion, Petrotrin (18 points), Paragon (15 points), last year’s winners Defence Force (15 points) and Queen’s Park (12 points).
