Former national middleweight and light heavyweight boxing champion, Michael Paul, left, stands with two of deceased national ex-boxer and trainer Bertram Legall’s children, Derek and Michelle.

Just three days after the passing of former boxer and trainer Bertram Legall, the boxing fraternity is again mourning over the passing of ex-boxer Lloyd “Shadow” George. On Saturday, George died around 2 am at his San Juan residence from heart failure at the age of 72. George’s death follows on the heels of Legall’s passing on May 2. He succumbed to pneumonia at Port-of-Spain General Hospital. Legall was 82. Undisputed national middleweight and light heavyweight boxing champion, Michael Paul, reflected on the lives of the two deceased boxers.

George, who got his alias “Shadow” for his elusive fighting style, is lauded by Paul as a “master of the game” and a “crowd pleaser.” “He was the master of the game and a fearless fighter. Fitness and a devotion to training were the two hallmarks of this champ. He was a crowd-pleaser and had the whole of San Juan behind him. I will miss this champion who represented family life.” Upon reflecting on Legall, who is often described as the greatest boxer and boxing trainer that T&T has ever produced, Paul revealed that it was Legall who saw his potential to become world material. “When Legall saw me, he was excited and saw ‘world material’,” Paul recalled.

Paul went on to say that Legall was always willing to support and help anyone concerning matters in or outside the ring. “Legall was free-handed and I saw him help a lot of people. His family was involved in boxing. They attended fights and even cried when I lost. It was Legall who got me my first job at Telco (now TSTT). He helped a lot of boxers and got jobs for them. People always looked up to him as a kind-hearted person. I enjoyed the time I spent with him, and thanked him for all he did for me before he died.”
