Local athletes attain CAC Junior standards at Quantum Classic

National javelin stand out Kershorn Walcott was among several junior athletes who have surpassed the qualifying standards for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championships. The championships will be held in El Salvador from June 29-July 1. Walcott tossed the metal spear 78.94m to set new records in the national open and junior men’s categories. The Toco resident surpassed the CAC Junior under-20 mark of 60.00 and the World Junior standard of 66.50m. Machel Cedenio won the boys under-20 400m in a personal best of 46.73. The 2011 double Carifta champion was quicker than the CAC junior under-18 barrier of 49.00 and World Junior 47.30 standard. 
 
 
The Presentation College student improved his pb of 46.89, set in his fourth place finish at last year’s World Youth finals. Asa Guevara was second in 48.52 also getting under the CAC Junior under-18 time. Mark London, Jareem Richards, Lisa Wickham, Zakiya Denoon, Jonathan Farinha, Nicholas Landeau and Reubin Walters, were all qualifiers. London, 2012 Carifta boys under-20 800m champion, took the men’s two-lap event in 1:51.99, quicker than the 1:54.00 standard. The Bishops/Zenith student was less than one second off the 1:51.00 World Junior mark. Richards got under the CAC junior boys under-20 time of 21.40 (and World Junior 21.20) in finishing fourth in the men’s 200m in 20.82, a new pb for the 2012 World Indoor 4X400m bronze medallist. 
 
 
The 18-year-old was quicker than his previous best of 20.92 at the Falcons Games on March 31. Wickham clocked a pb of 11.78 in capturing the girls under-20 100m, surpassing the 11.80 CAC Junior and World Junior mark. Denoon was third in 12.05, equaling the CAC Junior under-18 standard. Farinha got under the 10.75 CAC Junior under-18 standard in clocking 10.66 in taking third spot in the boys under-20 sprint. Landeau, 2011 Carifta boys under-17 1500/3000 gold medallist, clocked 4:03.80 to take second place in the men’s 1500m to pass the CAC Junior under-18 4:10.00 mark.
