Last chance for Supreme Quest

Supreme Quest for overdue success which is absolutley vital in the Maiden Stakes over an extended five furlongs of Bath tonight; ‘last chance saloon?’ Not exactly but such opportunities for this consistent, well-bred Exceed And Excel filly wont come much easier and, apart from Millibar, there simply isn’t a realistic danger to Supreme Quest earning much-needed ‘winning brackets’ for stud value. There are hundreds of superbly-bred maidens which need to win for aforementioned breeding acceptance, chances are 80-rated Supreme Quest will finally nail it. Millibar is an interesting ‘non-winner’ because shes a half-sister to recent Charles Hills-trained Doncaster debut winner, Sir Pedro; now they have finally realised this German-bred Manduro filly is a sprinter (raced over nine furlongs around Wolverhampton earlier this year!) Supreme Quest will need to be bang on her mettle. Earlier Newmarkey July course stages its first meeting of the year; an eight-race programme includes an attempt by potentially classy Shantaram to make it fourth time lucky and go one better in the Maiden Stakes over twelve furlongs.

To all intents and purposes this is definitely a ‘penalty-kick’ for John Gosden’s charge which has been runner-up in all races to date, at useful levels. Shantaram has been beaten narrowly by St Leger prospect, Model Pupil, and Epsom Derby runner-up, Main Sequence; just a question of the Galileo colt doing what a multitiude of his ‘brothers and sisters’ have been achieving, constant success. Although there are five meetings and thirty flat races it’s a difficult day, and this is the problem, too much racing; moderate prize-money and constant dirge making up racing pages and punters are finding such monotony a turn-off. In essence they are spreading half the contents of a jam jar onto a full loaf; as a consequence prize-money and quality are nigh non-existent. A poor show by the BHA. Let me give you sound advice if wanting to punt seriously, follow this column which adopts a pragmatic approach to winner-finding which has never been more difficult; results illustrate that.
