Onetokeep wins impressively in Arima

John O’Brien trained three-year-old gelding Onetokeep lived up to his name by winning the inaugural running of the Grade One Betting Levy Board (BLB) T&T Breeder Classic over 1,800 metres on the main track, at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, yesterday.
Mary Camacho’s thoroughbred enhanced his classic reputation with an impressive 4 3/4 lengths win, to stretch his lead as the top money-spinner for the season with a first prize cheque of $300,000. Onetokeep has now amassed $741,000 for the year with the Derby and Champion Stakes still to come.
The top four West Indian-bred three-year-olds were expected to battle in what was deemed a competitive event but Brian Harding and Onetokeep had other ideas.
Onetokeep broke smartly and headed the field before Naughty and ‘N’ Nice picked up the running. He was followed by Unquestionable, The Big Squeeze, Big Thing and Nettoyer. Going down the back, Onetostop was pulling Harding’s hand out of the socket, and the veteran rider allowed his mount an inch of the rein. He moved smoothly alongside Naughty ‘N’ Nice as Devika Rani and Big Thing tried to keep tabs.
With 500 metres left, and all the major contenders in good positions, Harding asked Onetokeep to quicken and the son of Big Country went two lengths clear of Big Thing, Nettoyer and The Big Squeeze.  
However, the best was yet to come and when Harding gave Onetokeep the office 300 metres out, he sailed away from his field for an easy success. 
The ease of victory suggested Onetokeep will be the Derby favourite and the horse they will all have to beat.
The Big Squeeze ran on well to snatch second from Big Thing with Nettoyer in fourth.
Onetokeep registered the time of 1:56.56.  
Former champion trainer Glenn Mendez was a happy man, as his odds-on favourite Safra Tilah won the first juvenile event for the year impressively by 2 ½ lengths in the good time of 48.02 seconds. Well away under Ricky Jadoo, the two-year-old filly shaded leaders Secret Circle and Something Black. 
Training honours for the day fell to O’Brien who saddled three winners, King Whistler, Island Star and Onetokeep. Riding honours were shared between Brian Boodramsing and Shane Ellis who both rode three winners.
