Makbullet to hit the mark at Musselburgh

At first glance Discoverer looked nigh on a ‘cert’ for the seven-runner Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs of Lingfield polytrack. A second one confirmed my original assessment, moreso! Once-raced Discoverer almost pulled off quite a gamble, over course and distance 16 days ago, when caught right on the post by fast-finishing Bronze Angel. John Gosden’s charge dead-heated for second in a tremendously exciting conclusion. Discoverer should be the definitive ‘yankee’ anchor!’ As mentioned so often, it’s necessary to have a ‘cert’ when playing four trebles and an accumulator (forget about the doubles!) because this bet then amounts to ‘any two from three,’ which appeals to those of you who treat punting seriously, if not professionally. Money has to be respected, ‘look after the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves’ is the motto we’re working on and readers are, obviously, my prime consideration. Roedean has to be included today. If she doesn’t go one better in the Maiden Stakes over an extended mile of Wolverhampton, there simply is no hope for this Jamie Osborne-trained, Oratorio fillly which races in the well-known colours of Dr Marwan Koukash. Last week, Roedean was runner-up to ‘hot-pot’ Appealing over six furlongs of this course. Others were ten lengths and upwards in arrears and the time-handicap mark good enough to see off a bunch of extremely moderate rivals. We’re set for a cold snap (’about time’ say farmers!) and all-weather racing will undoubtedly come into its own if, indeed, that’s the case. Interestingly, polytrack changes in character, according to several clerks of courses, but it wont stop what has been a successful punting spell for this column these past few weeks, due to ‘specialisation!’ NH, at this time of year, is tremendous. Did you back Gores Island @ 14/1, Wednesday?
