T&T’s Smith faces Banai in C’bean showdown
T&T’s Omar Smith of Fine Line Fight Factory will take on Suriname’s Joey Banai in a regional kick-boxing showdown on Saturday on a card dubbed ‘Fight Night XXIX, Night of Champions’ at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas.
The fight is part of the Fine Line’s 29th event and will determine the Caribbean Super welterweight champion. It will be preceded by a mouth-watering contest between T&T’s Andell Lakhan and Vimal Jagoo for the right to be crowned National welterweight champion while Nicholas Persad and Royel Haynes will square-off in a non-title fight.
Persad defeated Haynes in the last meeting between them and Saturday he will attempt to prove that there was no luck in the victory. Haynes on the otherhand said he has been training very hard for the rematch and will leave nothing for him to chance.
In the undercard, Fine Line’s Anil Lutchman who is known popularly as ‘Tech Guy’ will make his debut in the kickboxing arena in the welterweight division. Officials are carefully selecting an opponent for him in an attempt to ensure the bout is evenly contested. ‘Tech Guy’ in a release yesterday said he will be coming to show that he does not only function behind a computer and will rip his opponent apart.
From the card, promoter Bharrath Ramoutar hopes to encourage the young men to continue their exploits in the ring, saying he also hopes that the event will inspire females to get back into the sport. “In times gone we have had females in the sport, but due to little or no competition, it is hard to keep them motivated. We hope that when they see events taking place regularly now, they will be motivated to continue their training”.
Ramoutar, an ex kick-boxer now turn promoter and coach, also expressed his gratitude to sponsors of the event, such as National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB), Chaguanas Auto Supplies, Print Art Services, Monisec Security and Bodyguard Services, Toby’s Bar, Fan Zone, V&N Auto Supplies, Evolution Fitness and Francis Townhomes. The event also received support from individuals who donated trophies for specific bouts.
Tickets for the event are reasonably priced at $100 ringside and $150 general admission and are available at Fine Line Gym and Fanzone, Centre City Mall, (both located in Chaguanas), Rough House Gym in St. James. Interested persons can also call 772-9640 or 763-1187.
